How to configure your GA4 property?

Connecting a new GA4 data stream to your currently Universal Analytics property is simple.

Steps to setup your GA4 property:
  1. Navigate to the Admin tab in your Google Analytics account.
  2. Confirm the correct Account & Property are selected.
  3. Click GA4 Setup Assistant in the Property column.
  4. In the Setup Wizard, click Get Started.
  5. Click Create Property to complete the setup.

How do you use Google Tag Manager (GTM) and GA4 to track custom events?

GA4 uses an event-based data model with the option to update your tracking solutions using development resources. There are a number of ways to track events on your website using GA4, including the use of GTM.

What is enhanced measurement in GA4?

Ensure your enhanced measurement enabled to automatically track the following events in your new GA4 property:

  • Page views
  • Scrolls
  • Outbound clicks
  • Site search results
  • Video engagement
  • File downloads

Steps to enable your enhanced measurement:

  1. Navigate to the Admin tab in your Google Analytics account.
  2. Confirm the correct Account & Property are selected.
  3. In the Property column, click Data Streams then Web.
  4. Under Enhanced Measurement switch it on to enable all the options.

What's the difference between UA and GA4 reporting?

UA traditionally uses session-based measurement for its reporting, while GA4 is event-based. The changing privacy landscape is making it very difficult to track users as they travel across different platforms digitally. GA4 uses machine learning technology to fill in any missing data in order to create a single user journey linked to the same identity. Instead of the long list of predefined reports you would find in UA, GA4 users report summary cards. Each scorecard can be analyzed deeper to extract more information from it.

When should I switch to GA4?

The short answer is: ASAP. We know that Google will be discontinuing its Universal Analytics (UA) platform on June 30, 2023. Set up your GA4 account to run in parallel wil UA before June 30, 2022 to ensure you have year-over-year data in your GA4 property before UA sunsets.
